Introduction:
Having previously owned two pairs of the Salomon GTX shoes, I decided to give the Salomon Outrise hiking shoe a go. The main reason for this was budget, the next series of the GTX was retailing around £150 and the Outrise was on offer for £90. But would I come to regret my decision?
Design and Appearance:
The outrise shoe features a rugged and practical design. The combination of earthy colours or my choice of black isn’t flashy, which is ideal for blending in with my range of outdoor clothing. The simplicity of design continues with the use of standard lacing, opposed to the quicklace system on the GTX, but this was not a significant loss in my opinion
Comfort and Fit:
These shoes are incredibly comfortable right out of the box. The snug fit feels secure without being overly tight, and the cushioning is substantial, which is a blessing rucking with heavier weights. The support is good, but not the full enclosure given by the GTX.
Durability and Material:
Salomon’s reputation for durability is upheld by the Outrise. The robust construction, reinforced toe and heel caps, and high-quality materials make these shoes capable of withstanding rough trails and rocky terrain. The GORE-TEX membrane ensures waterproofing and breathability, allowing you to tackle wet conditions without sacrificing comfort.
Traction:
One of the best aspects of the Salomon Outrise is its traction. The Contagrip outsole provides exceptional grip on various surfaces, from slippery rocks to muddy trails. The multidirectional lugs deliver superior stability, even on challenging downhill slopes.
Performance:
In terms of performance, these shoes excel on all fronts. The GORE-TEX lining kept my feet dry during hikes through wet terrain, and the breathability is notable. I’ve hiked in both hot and cold conditions, and the Outrise maintained a comfortable temperature inside. However, after 18 months of regular usage, the shoe is starting to lose its waterproofing.
Support and Protection:
These shoes offer excellent ankle support without being too restrictive. The protective toe and heel caps safeguard against accidental bumps and impacts, and the padded collar provides additional support while preventing debris from entering the shoe.
Overall Impression:
The Salomon Outrise hiking shoe is a good practical choice for Rucking. Its durable construction, impressive traction, and GORE-TEX technology make it suitable for tackling various terrains and weather conditions. I would confidently rate it at 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Final Thoughts:
In summary, the Salomon Outrise hiking shoe is a versatile and reliable choice for the environments that most Rucking will take place in. Its combination of comfort, durability, and waterproofing technology makes it well-suited for Rucking. These shoes have become an essential part of my Rucking gear, and I highly recommend them to fellow outdoor enthusiasts.
